Building Fluency in Listening and Speaking
ABSTRACT: According to Nation and Macalister’s (2010) Four-Strands Model, in order to maximize student learning, a well-balanced curriculum should center around four equal parts: meaning-focused input, meaning-focused output, language-focused learning, and fluency development. This presentation will show how technology can be used to build fluency in listening and speaking. Through a flipped classroom model with extensive listening assignments, the presenter builds students’ note-taking skills on authentic sources without transcripts or captions (Hubbard, 2017), followed by paired, in-class timed oral reports. Participants will learn about the resources used and the procedure that has resulted in improved listening and speaking skills. |
